Unwritten Letters (Lettres jamais écrites) by Estelle Savasta
translated by Kirsten Hazel Smith
"Write the one letter that you've never written": this was the task set for the Year 11 pupils in Cavaillon by Estelle Savasta, artist-in-residence at the school for a year. Colin wrote to the grandfather he lost seven years earlier. Maxime penned a letter to the son he one day hoped to have, and Elisa wrote to her existence, asking for forgiveness for not knowing where she was leading herself… Each of the letters was then entrusted to a different playwright, who was asked to write back as if they were the letter's intended recipient: Colin's grandfather, Maxime's son, and Elisa's inner self… Unwritten Letters is therefore a dialogue between a teenager and a writer, and between reality and fiction. In styles that differ from letter to letter, all with the same moving spirit, the themes the writing tackles lend them universal scope that resonates with everyone.
