The Transformer (Delta Charlie Delta)
Editions Espaces 34
by Michel Simonot
translated by Felicity Davidson
On an October evening in Clichy-sous-Bois three youths—15-year-old Bouna and 17-year-old Zyed and Muhittin—make a dash for it, the police hot on their heels. They seek shelter in a transformer. A police officer spots them, but keeps silent. The three friends are electrocuted. Two of them die. One survives. Weeks of rioting ensue, and two police officers are brought to trial. A decade later, the facts of the case are re-examined in court: hours, minutes, and seconds revisited, along with voices recorded on the police radio. A decade later, the lone survivor remains haunted by the memory of the two dead teens. The boy nobody talks about. A boy who stands up to the police, a boy cross-examined, like a tragedy that knows no end.
