In order to raise the international profile of francophone dramatic writing, ARTCENA joined with the French Ministry of Culture, the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the SACD (French Society of Dramatic Writers and Composers) to launch Contxto.
At a meeting on 27 February, which took place at ARTCENA's headquarters, the parties signed a memorandum of agreement, thereby launching this new network, which aims to promote the translation, marketing and staging of plays by francophone writers.
Contxto brings together organisations with an interest in the promotion of francophone plays overseas, contributing to the funding, pooling and distribution of translated works, drawing on the skills available in the various branches of the Institut Français and their knowledge of local stakeholders. The members of the network work to translate the plays as well as to share them throughout the network, to market them to local stakeholders and to undertake promotional campaigns about the plays and actors involved. Contxto will expand to cover other language zones and is initially focusing on English-speaking countries.
To select the works that will be supported, Contxto draws from selections made by independent bodies, composed of professionals from the world of theatre: the French national commission for the support of dramatic creation, the jury of the Grand Prix de Littérature Dramatique as well as expert committees established by contributing, partner and associate members. Once a year, ARTCENA submits a selection of plays to overseas branches of the Institut Français, who vote on them and adapt their choice of works to the local context and according to their artistic visions.
Contxto is co-ordinated by ARTCENA, in support of the organisation's objective of supporting dramatic writing. ARTCENA designs ways to raise awareness of translated works and promotes and develops the network.
Francophone playwrights are highly esteemed in France, and the signatories of this new network hope that Contxto will raise their profile internationally and that many overseas artists and professionals will be able to bring their works to life.
